July 1 2026 – New Formalized Expert Recommandations (RFE) on point-of-care testing in emergency room

The French Society or Emergency Medicine (SFMU), in collaboration with the SFBC (French Society of Clinical Biology), the SFM (French Society of Microbiology) an the SFTH (French Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis), publieshed its Formalized Expert Recommendations (RFE) on point-of-care in emergency room.

Why are these RFE essential?
These recommendations aim to optimize the use of point-of-care testing tools to improve the efficiency and safety of patient care in emergency situations. They are based on the latest scientific evidence and the multidisciplinary expertise of the involved learned societies.

February 4, 2026: Publication in the Official Journal of a ministerial decree on point-of-care testing (POCT) – A major step forward, but challenges remain!!

On February 4, 2026, a ministerial decree modifying the conditions for carrying out sampling and analysis of medical biology tests outside of laboratories was published in the Official Journal. This text, which frames the practice of POCT, marks a decisive step for their deployment in France.

A direct impact on patient care

At the territorial level, the evolution of care practices outside hospital services is necessarily linked to hospital medicine practices, and more particularly emergency medical department (pre- and intra-hospital). These latter, privileged fields of application of POCT, will be able to benefit from essential tools for a rapid and accurate diagnosis in critical situations.

POCTs: a public health issue

For these examinations to find their place in emergency medical practices, their development must be ambitious, structured and adapted to their specific characteristics. This implies:

A streamlining of the exam list,
Demonstrating their medical and economic benefits,
The production of solid scientific evidence.

November 18, 2025: POCER Network Launch Meeting

On November 18, 2025, the POCER network was officially launched during a unifying meeting, bringing together more than sixty participants from the diagnostic industry, emergency medicine, medical biology, and the French National Research Agency (ANR). This event, organized both in-person and remotely, marked the beginning of an unprecedented national collaboration dedicated to innovation and research in off-site medical biology for emergency medical services.

The participants’ enthusiasm resulted in rich and varied exchanges, punctuated by numerous questions and promising discussions around future collaborative projects. This day thus laid the foundation for a collective dynamic serving the improvement of medical practices in emergency situations.

November 18, 2024: POCER wins the ANR call for projects “Clinical investigation networks – medical devices and in-vitro diagnostic devices”.

In light of regulatory challenges and difficulties encountered by French medical device actors, the ANR call for projects “Clinical Investigation Networks” represents a real opportunity to boost clinical research. Among the winners, POCER stands out by structuring an innovative network dedicated to Point Of Care testing in emergency medicine structures, with the ambition of accelerating the development, validation and marketing of safe and efficient medical devices.

Launched in 2023, the call for projects “Clinical investigation networks – medical devices and in vitro diagnostic medical devices” aims to structure clinical research in France by financing the creation and development of public and private investigation networks dedicated to medical devices as well as in vitro diagnostic medical devices.

This call for projects responds to the major challenges revealed or accentuated by the health crisis, as well as to the application of the new European regulations MDR 2017/745 and IVDR 2017/746, which impose reinforced requirements in terms of quality, safety and performance of devices. Medical device manufacturers now face significant challenges in ensuring their products comply with these stringent standards.

Despite a recognized and very dynamic research and innovation ecosystem, France is struggling to fully capitalize on its domestic market. In light of these findings, this call for projects appears as a structuring solution to overcome current obstacles and boost innovation in the medical device sector in France.

Six projects were selected at the end of 2024 as part of the ANR call for projects, with the following objectives:
✅ Promote the conduct of clinical studies (pre or post CE marking) by supporting sponsors in the development, design and conduct of these studies;
✅ Create concrete bridges between hospitals, manufacturers and start-ups to encourage collaborative projects and accelerate innovation;
✅ Strengthening the attractiveness of French clinical investigation networks and improving their positioning on European calls for projects
